Albert Gregory Millican Silver Star Citation - United States Navy - USS Helena (CL-50)
Silver Star Citation for Albert Gregory Millican for action on the USS Helena (CL-50) off Guadalcanal in 1942. His name was misspelled "Milligan" instead of "Millican" in the citation, but this is a scan of a photocopy of the original.
Al was a family friend, especially of my Uncle Cal Smith. I remember Al's telling the story with a bit of a self-depreciating twist. As he told it, it was not so much bravery which kept him at his gun as the fact he was so scared he couldn't let go of it!
Thank you for sharing that. I never knew him as my grandfather as he passed a few months before my birth. It sounds like he was a humble man and a great man with a lot of quiet dignity from the way my father described him. Thank you for adding that detail to our family history!
